We are delighted to announce the appointment of Johan Öhlén as Kale United chief financial officer (CFO) as we push forward with a string of strategic investments and ready for the launch of our EUR 1 million funding round.
With a background in asset management including as a senior portfolio analyst for SEB (one of the largest banks in Scandinavia), Johan spent the last 10 years primarily working with private equity and venture investments.
The team managed assets in excess of SEK 30 billion on behalf of foundations and insurance companies, and brings a wealth of expertise as well as a passion for a plant-based future to his new role at Kale United.
Building the plant-based future
Johan’s appointment comes amid exciting developments – including our recent investment in a controlling stake in Sweden’s most well established plant-based brand, Astrid Och Aporna, partnering with the VBites team, led by Heather Mills.
Johan’s experience will be invaluable in supporting the relaunch of Astrid Och Aporna as well as driving the wider Kale United strategy as we continue to grow as a dynamic and unique company group, creating the Scandinavian plant-based investment and growth hub.
Following our successful EUR 250,000 crowdfunding in 2018 and key strategic investments, including shareholdings in globally renowned brands such as Beyond Meat and Ocean Hugger Foods, Kale United’s second funding round raising EUR 1 million will continue to support the growth of global game-changing plant-based businesses.
Short and long-term goals
“I joined Kale United to contribute to a societal shift away from the usage of animals and animal-based products towards a more environmentally friendly and ethical plant-based society,” said Kale United CFO Johan Öhlén.
“In the short term, besides growing Kale United’s business and portfolio, I am especially looking forward to supporting Astrid och Aporna with the exciting Scandinavian relaunch.” Johan added.
“Clearly, from a financial perspective, the plant-based movement represents an unprecedented global growth opportunity, and our job now is to identify the best businesses to support and create a sustainable ecosystem that helps them expand in an increasingly competitive market.”
Kale United Founder Måns Ullerstam said: “I founded Kale United because of the need to marry financial expertise with plant-based companies, and to be able to strengthen and support their growth with proper financial structures and governance.
We have been looking for the right CFO and investment manager, aware that we were looking for a needle in a haystack; finding someone with extensive experience in the banking industry working with investments on a larger scale, who shared our ethical values and lived in Stockholm, Sweden.
We are very pleased to have found all this in Johan Öhlén, who has joined our team to strengthen us in time for the next financing round. With his financial expertise and shared values, I feel that he is an amazing fit and am looking forward to benefiting from his insights as we enter the next critical phase in our growth journey.”
